About Me

Hi! My name is Ginny Bixby and I am the politics and enterprise reporter for MoCo360 (formerly Bethesda Beat), the online daily news arm of Bethesda Magazine in Montgomery County, Maryland. I report on the inner workings of local politics and government, and I also produce enterprise reporting on everything from how elections work, to the epidemic of traffic-related deaths, to how marginalized communities respond to discrimination and hatred.

As a journalist, I have a particular passion for reporting on how race, gender, and sexuality as well as history intersect in government policies and modern society. I feel strongly that reporters have a responsibility to uplift marginalized voices that have often been ignored by the media. I also care a lot about making the journalism industry a better place for women and LGBTQ people.

I previously worked as the city reporter for The Daily Progress, a daily newspaper in Charlottesville, Virginia. I covered the city government and other happenings in the city, and led the publication’s coverage of the Confederate statue removal in July 2021. I focused a lot on how the historical landscape of the city affects its present day existence, especially in regards to racial segregation.

My reporting has been picked up by state, regional, and national media - including The Washington Post, the Associated Press, and US News and World Report. I was interviewed on NPR’s Here and Now and on LBC Radio in London, UK about the removal of Charlottesville’s Confederate statues.

Prior to joining the Progress, I was a regular contributor to The Free Lance-Star daily newspaper in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I was a journalism intern for the Student Press Law Center, where I covered First Amendment policy and the student press. I was also an intern at RVA Magazine and GayRVA, where I primarily reported on politics, arts and culture, and LGBTQ issues and culture.

As a student, I served as the associate editor of The Blue & Gray Press, the University of Mary Washington’s student newspaper, for two years and served as the viewpoints editor for one year. In March 2019 I was a featured student journalist for the Newseum, Freedom Forum Institute, and Student Press Law Center’s Year of the Student Journalist. I was featured as a guest on the Freedom Forum’s First Five Podcast.

I graduated from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia in May of 2020 with a double B.A. in American Studies and English. Outside of my work, I love reading, collecting music on vinyl, going thrifting, taking care of my many houseplants, and finding ways to continue my lifelong passion for dance.
